Arsenal: Aaron Ramsdale’s lavish Premier League pass against Southampton deserved a goal

Aaron Ramsdale was in glorious form for Arsenal again this weekend.

It is simply beyond reproach that the 23-year-old was one of the Premier League’s rookies of the season, as his display at Southampton was just the latest in a long string of masterclasses.

Eyebrows were not lacking when Arsenal scooped the Englishman for £ 24million this summer, but it turned out to be nothing less than an inspired move by the club.

Ramsdale’s stellar season

Having quickly usurped Bernd Leno in the Gunners’ goaltending pecking order, Ramsdale handled the pressure with remarkable confidence and presence for a shooter his age.

Not only has Ramsdale produced a series of scandalous stops – notably this Stop denying James Maddison – but he also vacuumed clean sheets like they were old-fashioned.

Despite playing for an Arsenal side that have rippled in form this season, the former Sheffield United man amassed the third-most Premier League shutouts with seven clean sheets in 13 appearances.

Ramsdale shines against Southampton

And Ramsdale’s superb performance in the 3-0 victory over Southampton was the last of the group, with only Ederson and Edouard Mendy preventing the opposition from scoring more often.

However, it would be superficial to limit our praise to Ramsdale’s defensive contributions, as Saturday’s victory was another showcase of the Englishman’s offensive threat as well.

Arsenal fans will be well aware that Ramsdale is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League with his feet, causing real problems for the opposition with his distribution throughout the 2021/22 campaign.

Ramsdale’s superb pass against Southampton

In fact, Ramsdale almost paved the way for Arsenal to score straight from one of his kicks in the first half stoppage time against Southampton with a truly stunning pass that found its way to Gabriel Martinelli .

And while, sadly, Martinelli didn’t pull off the shot required to give Ramsdale an assist or a created chance, there is no denying that this was a masterclass in the distribution of a goalie.

You can even tell from Ramsdale’s reaction to his pass that didn’t result in a goal that it really was an outrageous delivery, so be sure to check out the man’s punt. Arsenal in all its glory below:

Imagine being so precise in passing the ball out of your hands … ridiculous.

Deserves a goal

Perhaps the best part about Ramsdale’s pass was that it almost looked like he was just going to roll the ball towards his defense, before deciding to swing towards the fences with a long ball.

And Martinelli was glad he did because the pass in his run on the left wing couldn’t have been more precise, so it’s a shame that he wasn’t more ruthless and he fired a shot.

However, perhaps we shouldn’t be so greedy that we wonder “what if?” Because goal or not, we should let him serve as yet another reminder this season that Ramsdale is one of the best in the business.
