Swanage Railway has unveiled its most advanced diesel-electric hybrid locomotive, marking its first passenger journey on the heritage line after a surprise appearance during the annual Diesel Gala and Beer Festival. This innovative train, designed to cut CO2 emissions by 50%, joins eight heritage steam locomotives and a pioneering push-pull system, reflecting Britain’s shift toward cleaner energy in the post-1960s era. The event, held in Purbeck from May 8th to 10th, attracted over 10,000 visitors, showcasing the railway’s commitment to sustainability while celebrating its 50th anniversary. Key highlights include an intensive three-train schedule across nine miles, connecting Norden and Furzebrook to River Frome. The beer festival at Corfe Castle station featured 40 Dorset ales and 10 ciders, emphasizing local culture.
