This innovative technique is now being used to create a comprehensive map of hard coral distribution in the Ryukyu Islands, offering a fascinating glimpse into the underwater world.
Diving into the Coral Atlas
The Ryukyu Islands Coral eDNA Atlas is more than just a map; it's an immersive experience. Users can virtually explore the rich diversity of coral reefs, uncovering the secrets of these delicate ecosystems. What makes this project truly remarkable is its ability to provide an accurate snapshot of coral communities through the analysis of eDNA in seawater samples. This method, pioneered by the Marine Genomics Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), allows scientists to identify and quantify different coral genera without disturbing the reefs themselves.
