New Bayer Leverkusen coach Gerardo Seoane is delighted with Czech striker Patrik Schick’s performance at UEFA Euro 2020.

Schick scored four of his country’s six goals in the pan-European final, propelling the Czechs to the quarter-finals, where they face Denmark on Saturday.

At the scale of the tournament, only the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo found the net more often (five times).

Seoane, who signed a three-year contract at BayArena, can’t get enough of the Leverkusen striker.

“It’s fun to watch the wonderful performances of Patrik Schick”, the 42-year-old Swiss newspaper Blick. “He’s a top striker and a fantastic finisher.”

Statistics don’t lie. Schick’s four goals are the product of just eight efforts on target, in four appearances spanning 325 minutes. Ronaldo hit the target the same number of times before his Portuguese side were knocked out by Belgium in the last 16, but scored three of his five penalty goals.

Schick’s tournament goal competitor against Scotland, meanwhile, had an expected goals score (xG) of just 0.03 when he took the ball some 49.7 yards from the opposing goal. This is the furthest distance we have scored in a European Championship or World Cup since 1980.

Schick – who is the only player left in the competition with three or more goals – has found the back of the net nine times for Leverkusen in 2020/21. The new campaign will be his second at the club, but the third in the Bundesliga after an eight-goal loan to RB Leipzig in 2019/20.

Schick has already played for Roma, Sampdoria, Bohemians Praha and Sparta Prague. The 25-year-old is under contract at Leverkusen until the summer of 2025.
