Jersey received an invitation to the UEFA Regions’ Cup

As the defending FA Inter-League Cup champions of England, the JFA combination – Jersey’s grassroots football league – has received an invitation to send a team to Italy next September to play in the Cup. UEFA regions. Their entry, under the guise of ‘England’, follows an earlier belief that they would miss due to cancellations linked to the pandemic.

The 2020 UEFA Regions Cup was scrapped following Covid-19, but with English FA officials deciding not to host an Inter-League Cup in 2021/22, they reverted to the tournament winners 2019/20.

England have been trained in Group 5 alongside Italy, Germany and North Macedonia. Each country will send a team from its top amateur league, with the group winners advancing to the finals in June 2023.

Martin Cassidy, manager of Jersey Muratti and JFA Combination XI, said: “When I took on the job, the golden driver had to win the Inter-League Cup and go to the Uefa Regions Cup. That’s something. that most players have never had the opportunity to do in their lifetime.

“The bottom line is that we now have what we deserve. We are champions of England and we want to go to Europe. I hope we can continue our good form but it will be a difficult draw, against Italy and Germany. Both have already won the competition and they will be at a very high level.

“The players will be delighted. These will be international matches and we will have to make sure that every player is available for the tournament. We need to have all of our best players and I’m sure they will all want to play.

Group 5 is scheduled to start on or around September 28, 2022, with a location in Italy to be confirmed.

Jersey has only reached this stage of European football once before, in 2013, when they met Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and host San Marino at the Regions Cup intermediate stadium.
