Marco Richter scored for a second straight Bundesliga game as Hertha Berlin edged Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-0 in the German capital on Saturday.

The visitors started off brilliantly in the capital and were awarded a penalty after just eight minutes after Joe Scally passed through the box, but the decision was overturned by the referee after his video assistant intervened and a consultation with the field monitor. Gladbach remained camped inside the home side’s half and Breel Embolo was next to threaten as the Switzerland international fired more than 10 minutes later following a careful trade with Lars Stindl at the edge of the Hertha surface. Despite their dominance, Gladbach found himself behind shortly before the break as Richter’s acrobatic volley in the ground looped past Yann Sommer and into the far corner to give Hertha the advantage against the course of the game.

Adi Hütter called on Florian Neuhaus and Alassane Plea early in the second half, with former Hertha caddy Luca Netz and captain Stindl making way. However, they were not able to make an immediate impact as visitors started the second period much slower than the first. The hosts, on the other hand, were gaining more and more control as the match progressed. And when Plea had the ball in the net, he was quickly ruled out for an offside in the preparation as Gladbach huffed and puffed unsuccessfully. Hertha held on for a second straight league victory which puts them above the visitors and in 10th place.
