Southampton stun Chelsea, Inter and Roma with Serie A wins earlier this week

Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong were both on the scoresheet in the first half as Southampton beat Chelsea 2-1, handing Thomas Tuchel’s side their second loss of the season in the English Premier League.

While it was Raheem Sterling and Chelsea who struck the first blow after 23 minutes, Southampton were quick to complete the comeback after scoring an equalizer through Lavia three minutes after conceding.

The result saw Southampton lift Chelsea to seventh in the Premier League table on as many points and a similar goal difference, but on merit for their win.

“It’s too easy to push us off the track,” Tuchel said after the game. “It’s too easy to bully us.”

Elsewhere in England’s premier football league, Leeds United and Everton played out a 1-1 draw at Elland Road. Anthony Gordon’s advantage over the Toffees in the first half was canceled by Luis Sinisterra 10 minutes into the second. Leeds, who beat Chelsea earlier, now sit fifth in the table while Everton are in the bottom half of the table.

Brighton also traveled to Fulham and were greeted by a well-prepared Marco Silva side who overcame them in a 2-1 win thanks to an Aleksandar Mitrovic goal and a Lewis Dunk own goal.

Inter and Roma victorious in Serie A

AS Roma climbed to the top of the Italian table with a 3-0 victory over Monza which saw Juventus new signing Paulo Dybala register a first-half brace as his first two goals for his new club.

After the match, Roma coach Jose Mourinho praised his new striker.

“Last year, when Juventus played here with us and he was substituted, I said to him, ‘You’re really good, kid.’ Well, tonight I said the same to him and we laughed thinking about how things have changed since then,” Mourinho told DAZN.

Inter also put the pressure on defending champions and derby rivals AC Milan, beating Cremonese three times in a 3-1 home win. Joaquin Correa, Nicollo Barella and Lautaro Martinez were on the scoresheet for the 2020/21 champions, who moved into second place in the points table, just above Milan.

Matchday five will see the last two Serie A champions meet in the Derby della Madonnina aka Derby de Milan, with both teams still hoping to assert their lead in the standings at the start of the season.
