The Premier League’s most expensive midfielders including Leeds United stars Kalvin Phillips, Liverpool and Chelsea

Kalvin Phillips’ long-term future at Leeds United has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks.

The midfielder is under contract at Elland Road until 2024, but Liverpool and Manchester United are among those credited with interest.

This isn’t the first time Phillips has been linked with an exit, but the England international’s stock has grown in recent months and there has inevitably been talk of a potential need for Champions League football.

There is no indication at this point that club or childhood fan Phillips is even considering a potential transfer, with talks on a new contract progressing.

But if the time comes when both parties agree that a transfer is the best option, what transfer fees could Leeds reasonably charge?

Industry Transfermarkt website collects a plethora of stats on every Premier League player, including an assigned transfer value.

When it comes to Premier League defensive midfielders, Phillips is considered the ninth most valuable in the division.

The Leeds midfielder is listed at £ 36million, which has increased by £ 9million since May due to his impressive performances at Euro 2020.

The 25-year-old’s price almost doubled in the space of a year, with the England international valued at £ 19.8million at the start of his first Premier League campaign.

It’s a value that puts Phillips in an esteemed national company, with Declan Rice and Rodri ranked among the most valuable defensive midfielders with honoraria of £ 63million each.

Wilfred Ndidi and Fabinho are listed with price tags of £ 54million, with N’Golo Kante next on the list at £ 49.5million. Chelsea team-mate Jorginho follows at £ 40.5million, with Tomas Soucek and Ruben Neves leveling at £ 37.8million.

Phillips comes in just behind West Ham and Wolves midfielders, and is seen as having the same worth as Arsenal’s Thomas Partey.

Of course, Leeds fans would very likely expect fees in excess of £ 36million if a transfer were sanctioned, given Phillips’ rise and importance to Marcelo Bielsa.
