Wolfsburg signs German international Luca Waldschmidt from Benfica
Wolfsburg have announced the signing of German international striker Luca Waldschmidt from Benfica.
Waldschmidt, 25, has signed a four-year contract with Wolves to return to the Bundesliga and his home country. The forward becomes Wolfsburg’s sixth permanent signing this summer.
“We have been following Luca’s development for a long time now and are delighted that he has now signed for VfL,” said Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schäfer. “Luca has already shown in the Bundesliga, and elsewhere, that he is a very dangerous striker who can play anywhere on the front line, which makes him very flexible.
“He is perfectly suited to our team, not only in terms of football ability but also in terms of personality. He is not yet at the end of his development and so we look forward to pursuing our goals with him.”
Waldschmidt – who has scored twice in seven international appearances for Germany – signed for Benfica from Freiburg in the summer of 2020. The 25-year-old scored 10 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions last season, and has some scored two in as many games. early 2020/21.
“I’m really happy to be back in the Bundesliga,” Waldschmidt said on the Wolfsburg website. âI really wanted to come back. After I started talking to the VfL management team, I quickly realized that making the move to VfL Wolfsburg was exactly the right one for me. I like the path taken by the club, and its philosophy and ambitions are completely in line with mine.
âI already know a couple of the guys and now I can’t wait to get to know the rest of the squad and the surrounding area. I want to contribute as quickly as possible to VfL achieving its goals in the Bundesliga and internationally.
Waldschmidt could make his Wolfsburg debut next weekend as Wolves, currently leading the Bundesliga table with two out of two wins, look to consolidate their top spot at home against RB Leipzig on Sunday, August 29.
