The January transfer window closes at 23:00 GMT on Monday and if last week goes by, Premier League clubs have a huge amount of work to do.

Despite a strong drive to strengthen throughout the league, only one senior player was signed by an elite club last week – and it was Aston Villa who loaned out a backup goalkeeper. Aside from Roma’s Robin Olsen, the pressure has been building to get deals done this week.

Athletic’s dedicated club correspondents explain what their side are trying to do over the next seven days.

Arsenal enter the final week of the window still hoping to strengthen their squad. “We are definitely trying,” Mike Arteta said in his press conference after the 0-0 draw with Burnley. “But I don’t know if we’re going to be able to do that.”

A centre-forward and a central midfielder are the main priorities. The club have not made any significant progress in their pursuit of Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic, and will therefore now consider alternatives such as Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak in the final week of the window.
