Josip Stanisic of Bayern Munich has chosen to represent Croatia at the senior international level instead of Germany.

Stanisic played with the German U19s, but was recently involved with the Croatian U21 squad. The 21-year-old has now secured his first senior call-up for Croatia, ahead of the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Cyprus (October 8) and Slovakia (October 11).

“My family is from Slavonski Brod, a town in eastern Croatia, so it’s a dream for me to play for the Croatia senior national team,” said the Munich-born defender.

“The Croatian federation and the coach have worked hard with me for several months and showed me how I fit in. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”

Stanisic’s appointment is just the reward for an impressive start to the campaign with Bayern. He played a big role in the preseason under Julian Nagelsmann and has already made seven competitive appearances in 2021/22, including four starts.

Stanisic – who can play through defense, but prefers to operate from the right-back – learned his trade in the 1860 youth teams Munich and Fürstenfeldbrück, before moving to Bayern in 2017. He made his senior debut towards the end of last season, after helping the reserves win the 3. Liga title the year before.
