Premier League rumours, transfer deadline, Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea, Antony to Manchester United, Frenkie de Jong, Wilfried Zaha

After a disastrous start to the Premier League season, Manchester United seem determined to turn things around for good with another world-class signing.

The Red Devils last week signed five-time Champions League winner Casemiro from Real Madrid, who was their fourth signing under new manager Erik ten Hag – but it’s not done yet.

There are reports that winger Antony is set to complete his move to Manchester United from Dutch powerhouse Ajax for a record Eredivisie fee.

Meanwhile, with the transfer deadline fast approaching, Cristiano Ronaldo could yet leave the club after being linked with a Premier League rival again.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford after United failed to qualify for the Champions League last season – finishing 35 points behind champions Manchester City.

But Ronaldo isn’t the only superstar to have dominated the headlines for what seems like an eternity, with midfielder Frenkie de Jong having been linked with major moves away from Barcelona.

While United would have been favorites for a time, Chelsea and Liverpool have emerged as potential suitors, although a decision has apparently been made.

UNITED MAKES A STATEMENT

Manchester United shocked the footballing world at the start of their Premier League campaign, losing to Brighton at Old Trafford.

But things went from bad to worse for the Red Devils, who were emphatically beaten 4-0 by Premier League minnows Brentford a week later.

A 2-1 win over rivals Liverpool saw the decorated English club climb from the bottom of the Premier League ladder, and they now sit eighth after a 1-0 win over Southampton on Saturday (AEST).

Fans caught a glimpse of star signing Casemiro who was substituted with 10 minutes left, but the Brazilian will soon be joined by one of his compatriots at the club in the coming days.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has announced that Antony will move to complete his move to England as a deal has been agreed for a fee of 100 million euros (A$144 million).

Romano believes the contract will be signed tomorrow and says it is a record fee for the Dutch league.

RONALDO LINKED TO PL RIVALS

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo pushed for a transfer late last term after United failed to qualify for the Champions League this season.

But according to The Independent, the Portugal international could potentially swap United’s famous red shirt for the navy one and line up for Premier League rivals Chelsea this season.

Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has reportedly visited Chelsea to see if a potential deal could be agreed with his star client.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag insists he wants Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford despite the volatile star’s absence for a second successive Premier League game.

Ronaldo started on the bench for United’s 1-0 win at Southampton on Saturday before making a largely anonymous second-half substitute appearance.

But Ronaldo has found it impossible to attract one of Europe’s top clubs, with the latest reports linking him to his former side Sporting Lisbon, as well as Napoli and Marseille.

As Thursday’s transfer deadline approaches, United remain adamant the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is not for sale in the second season of his second stint with the club.

But the sight of Ronaldo stopping to wave to United supporters after the final whistle at St Mary’s convinced some observers the 37-year-old was about to say goodbye.

The former Real Madrid and Juventus star finished as United’s top scorer last season but Ten Hag’s side have looked more threatening with him, beating both Liverpool and Southampton since he was dropped after starting the humiliating 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

Publicly at least, Ten Hag sticks to Ronaldo saying: “We played with him. So we want him to stay. That’s what we want. I hope.”

United have been linked with several strikers who could potentially replace Ronaldo, including Ajax star Anthony, who played under Ten Hag during his reign at the Dutch club.

However, Ten Hag reiterated that he would be happy even if United were unable to sign another central striker this week.

“We have Cristiano Ronaldo, we have Anthony Martial, we have Marcus Rashford, so everything is fine,” he said.

Ten Hag has already landed Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who made his debut as a late substitute against Southampton after completing his move from Real Madrid on Monday.

Ten Hag was delighted to involve him as he seeks to revamp United’s disappointing central midfield.

“I think it was pretty good for him to see what the Premier League looks like, his different style,” said Ten Hag.

“He’s played a few games, he’s played 90 minutes once, but he’s fit, he’s had a good pre-season with a lot of training sessions.

“Now you have to integrate him into a team, into a way of playing, and integrate him with his teammates.”

CHELSEA ASSESSING ITS OPTIONS

Chelsea are reportedly interested in a number of players, including Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha, although a former Arsenal captain remains high on their wishlist.

According The Guardianthe Blues are considering bringing the Ivory Coast international to Stamford Bridge, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is their first target.

The former Arsenal captain could make a sensational return to England with London rivals Chelsea, although it was reported earlier this month that he was happy in Spain.

DE JONG GETS HIS WISH FULFILL

After months of speculation, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is reportedly staying at the club.

CBS Sportsunderstands the Dutch international is ‘expected’ to stay with the Spanish giants as United have given up on a deal.

Earlier, Barcelona president Joan Laporta insisted he wants de Jong to stay at the club.

“Frenkie is our player and we want him to stay at Barcelona, he wants to stay too,” Laporta said.

“With him and his teammates, we have a very powerful midfield. He has offers, but we want him to stay.
